Hiking Society (AHS)
American
Trails. National trail advocacy organization
"working for the common interests of all
trail users," which in AT's case include
motorized offroad vehicle enthusiasts. Please
note that CORP does *not* advocate motorized
recreational vehicles on trails in Sonoma County
or anywhere else.
Americans
for Our Heritage and Recreation (AHR) This new coalition has launched a nationwide
grassroots campaign to preserve wildlands and
historic sites and promote outdoor recreation
through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).
Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG).
Bay Area Open Space Council (BAOSC). A regional council of parks
agencies, land trusts, and open space and trail
advocacy groups.
The Bay Trail. An
endeavor to encircle San Francisco Bay with a 400-mile
trail.
California Coastal Conservancy. This state resource agency "uses
entrepreneurial techniques to purchase, protect,
restore, and enhance coastal resources, and to
provide access to the shore."
California Native Plant Society.
California State Parks, Russian River/Mendocino
District. Includes the
Sonoma Coast and most of the Russian River
watershed.
California State Parks, Silverado
District. Includes
eastern Sonoma County, including the Mayacamas,
Sonoma Valley, and Sonoma Mountain.
Community Alliance with Family Farmers.
East Bay Regional Parks District. This district has 55 parks and
26 regional interpark trails (over 1,000 miles of
trails in all) covering more than 92,000 acres
within Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
Environmental
Center of Sonoma County. Provides office and
meeting space in central Santa Rosa for many
environmental organizations, including several
CORP member groups.
Great Outdoor Recreation Pages (GORP). An online magazine of outdoor
recreation. This is a .com rather than a .org
site, so be prepared for ads and salesy articles.
Greenbelt
Alliance. Working for sensible regional and
urban planning that preserves open space in the
San Francisco Bay Area.

Hiking North
of SF Bay. An excellent source of information
on North Bay hiking groups and activities,
including group outing schedules.
Madrone Audubon
Society. Sonoma County chapter of the
National Audubon
Marin
Agricultural Land Trust (MALT). This private,
non-profit land trust has placed conservation
easements over 26,000 acres of ag land in
neighboring Marin without any public funding.
Marin County
Open Space District. MCOSD has acquired 13,400
acres of open space, virtually all of which are
fully accessible to the public, 24 hours a day,
365 days a year.
Midpeninsula
Regional Open Space District. (MROSD) 42,000
acres of open space, virtually all accessible to
the public, with 250 miles of trails, in San
Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties.

Napa
County Land Trust. This non-profit land
trust, operating without government support, has
protected over 14,000 acres. 1,874 acres of open
space have been acquired and transferred to state
or local agencies and are open for public access.
Outdoor
Recreation Coalition of America (ORCA). Trade
association for the outdoor industry. Mission:
"To preserve and promote the human powered
outdoor recreation industry."
Peninsula
Open Space Trust (POST). The most vigorous
and successful private, non-profit land
conservancy in the Bay Area. Of the 38,000 acres
POST has preserved on the San Francisco
Pensinsula since 1977, an astonishing 29,000
acres (76%) have been transferred to public
agencies such as MROSD and
are now publicly accessible open space. Recent
acquisitions include a 5,638-acre property on the
San Mateo coast for $7 million.
Planning
and Conservation League (PCL). "Working
to maintain and strengthen environmental laws in
California."
The Ramblers'
Association. Britain's venerable and powerful
organization advocating "freedom to roam"
the countryside for more than 150 years. See also
the Open Spaces
Society, another important British group.
Room
to Roam, Sonoma County. A new public interest group
advocating extensive, nearby, public open space
to benefit people and nature.
Solano
County Farmlands and Open Space Foundation.
Another private nonprofit land trust which
permits extensive public access on several of its
large preserves.
Sonoma
County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space
District (SCAPOSD). This website has contact
numbers but little else.
Sonoma
County Regional Parks Department. Includes
specific information about each regional park.
Sonoma Land
Trust. Sonoma County's private, non-profit
land trust.
Sonoma
Mountain Preservation Group. Dedicated to
preserving the scenic and natural resources of
Sonoma County's namesake mountain.
Town
Hall Coalition of Sonoma County. "A
rural response to intensified vineyard
developement."
Trust
for Public Land (TPL). "Founded in 1972,
the Trust for Public Land is the only national
nonprofit working exclusively to protect land for
human enjoyment and well-being. TPL helps
conserve land for recreation and spiritual
nourishment and to improve the health and quality
of life of American communities."
