Subject: Outdoor Recreation Plan

Dear Supervisor Cale:

Recently I spoke with Jim Angelo,, Department Head of Parks and Recreation, concerning the upcoming meeting on August 24, 1999 requesting input on the Outdoor Recreation Plan. Since I have been involved in a number of youth activities in Sonoma County, I wanted to take the opportunity to provide some information.

I stay involved in youth activities, primarily soccer and Little League baseball, for my own benefit. However, I recognize it is a contribution and I do observe some needs with reference to these activities. Specifically, Sonoma County is woefully lacking in adequate soccer and baseball playing fields. When I travel to tournaments in Sacramento, Pleasanton, or even in Oregon, it is painfully obvious that other communities are way ahead of us in terms of the facilities they provide their youth. I'm a firm believer that if you keep kids busy, you recognize their talents, and provide them a meaningful outlet for their energy you can do a lot toward keeping a child away from problems we know exist, alcohol and illegal substances. I know as a former police officer I'm preaching to the choir, but if there is anything in the current plan that addresses these needs I would wholeheartedly support it and do so publicly if it would be of assistance. Thank you for soliciting my views.

Sincerely,
J. Michael Mullins
